THE OPPORTUNITY

Washington State University (WSU) recently launched the Functional Genomics Initiative (FGI) to address the University’s research Grand Challenge themes focused on sustainable resources for food production and sustaining health for people and animals. Through the FGI, WSU is assembling a cohesive cluster of cross-disciplinary investigators to build intellectual capacity in molecular and cellular biology, address societal and ethical issues in biotechnology and establish state-of-the-art research cores in gene editing and animal husbandry. In addition, WSU wishes to hire eight new faculty members and has hired two research core directors to build intellectual capacity in functional genomics. WSU participants in the FGI include the Department of Animal Sciences; the Center for Reproductive Biology; the School of Molecular Biosciences; the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology; the School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs and the WSU Extension system.

The Department of Animal Sciences seeks to hire an Assistant or Associate Professor in Stem Cell Biology to join the FGI group starting July 2019 or earlier. Applicants with expertise in all aspects of stem cell biology are welcome to apply, particularly in uncovering basic mechanisms of adult stem cell renewal and differentiation, pluripotency of embryonic stem cells, stem cell metabolism and metabolomics. The candidate is expected to establish a strong program centered on basic research of stem cell biology with applications to livestock production and/or human health. Demonstrated experience of working with livestock and gene editing will be given priority consideration. The successful candidate must have demonstrated successful engagement in and commitment to the recruitment, retention, development, and enrichment of a diverse faculty, staff and student community.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties will include maintaining a strong, externally funded research program based on a strong individual program but should include collaborative relationships with other FGI members and relevant faculty. The faculty member will be expected to teach and may include responsibility for undergraduate and/or graduate courses on topics central to the Animal Sciences education mission; and participating in service at the department, college and university levels.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • A earned doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in biosciences or related field by the time of hire/offer, with a strong record of publication and academic accomplishment appropriate for the stage of the candidate
  • Expertise with cellular, epigenetic or genetic regulation of stem cell biology
  • A minimum of 2 years Postdoctoral training or experience as a research faculty member
  • Applicants for an Assistant Professor position must demonstrate the potential to establish and maintain an externally funded research program. Applicants for an Associate Professor position must have established an extramurally funded research program with a record of peer-reviewed publications, record of excellence in both scholarly and educational activities, and national/international recognition.

Preferred

  • Expertise of stem cell biology in the context of whole animal physiology, growth and development
  • Demonstrated experience in research using livestock as an end point
  • Demonstrated experience with gene editing technologies at the whole animal level
  • Demonstrated experience in graduate education and a commitment to professional education at all levels
  • Extramurally funded research activity complementary to existing department, college and university strengths
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in developing and delivering undergraduate and graduate level courses
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills including the desire and ability to work on interdisciplinary teams

THE DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL SCIENCES

The Department of Animal Sciences at WSU offers the only four-year Animal Sciences degree in the state of Washington. Research in Animal Sciences is focused on mission-oriented and fundamental research in the areas of sustainable resources for society and sustaining and improving animal and human health. These research foci include animal behavior and well-being, environmental sustainability, genomics and genetics, muscle biology, nutrition, reproductive biology and physiology.
