About

The study of animal sciences encompasses a wide range of scientific disciplines focused on understanding the biology, behavior, well-being, and management of livestock and other animal species. Animal sciences applies this knowledge to animal production and care, including husbandry practices and the sustainable production of essential products such as meat, milk, and fiber. The field also explores the many ways animals contribute to society through recreation, companionship, therapy, conservation, and biomedical research.

As an Animal Sciences student at Washington State University, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between humans and animals while developing the scientific and practical skills needed to address challenges in agriculture, business, natural resources, and research. Through hands-on learning, faculty mentorship, and experiential opportunities, students are prepared to make meaningful contributions across diverse animal-related industries.

WSU Animal Sciences is also home to innovative research programs spanning nutrition and metabolism, genetics and genomics, reproduction and physiology, growth and meat science, environmental sustainability, dairy science, and salmonid aquaculture and conservation. These efforts advance animal health and welfare, support sustainable food production, and strengthen the connections between animals, people, and the environment.
